The Four Facets of Love

Love... a buddhist perspective
Love... a buddhist perspective

It's February, where the holiday dedicated to LOVE resides, and I'm super delighted to get to dig into Love with you over the next four weeks!

Love lost, love found, love sought after, un-requited love, true love, romantic love, parental love, tough love, real love, passionate love, enduring love, selfless love... There are lot's ways to describe love and no end to the places to look for an answer to "what do we really mean when we say love?".

The explanations, descriptions, quotes and definitions go on and on. Pretty much everyone has something to say about it. Including ME it turns out, and I happen to look to Buddhism for insight into this most perplexing and fundamental of human experiences.

I like this particular lens for looking at love for a couple of reasons.

  • It's ultimately grounded in an invitation to observe, explore and share our own experience.

  • It's intentionally and necessarily multi-dimensional

  • It is ultimately a framework inside of which to feel, act and be in love, and a playbook for how to go about it.

In this view, LOVE has four facets. And while each speaks to a distinct aspect of LOVE, they all belong to the same heart and are utterly inseparable. Much like the four directions of the compass needed to navigate space, all four dimensions of love are needed to navigate our humanity.
